THE TREATMENT FACILITY FOR PINE RIDGE
S.D. WAS CONTRACTED THROUGH INDIAN HEALTH SERVICES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
OGLALA SIOUX TRIBE FROM MARCH 2008 TO AUGUST 2008. THE PROJECT ENTAILED
MOVING 732,000 CUBIC YARDS OF EXCAVATION AND INSTALLING APPROXIMATELY 8000
LF OF PIPING WHICH RANGED FROM 4 INCH TO 12 INCH IN DIAMETER. NUMEROUS
VALVES AND STRUCTURES WERE ALSO INSTALLED FOR ISOLATING AND TRANSFERRING THE
WASTE WATER TO AND FROM CONTAINMENT CELLS SO TREATMENT OF RAW SEWAGE COULD
TAKE PLACE NATURALLY. INCLUDED IN THESE STRUCTURES WERE FLOW CONTROL VALVES
CALLED THIRSTY DUCKS WHICH WOULD LIMIT FLOW FROM ONE CELL TO 710 G.P.M.
BETWEEN MAIN CONTAINMENT CELLS. IN ADDITION TO THE FLOW CONTROL VALVES,
DISTRIBUTION HEADERS WERE PLACED ON LOWER CELLS TO CONTROL AND FURTHER TREAT
EFFLUENT. THE MAIN CONTAINMENT CELLS ALSO HAD IN EXCESS OF 10.000 CUBIC
YARDS OF RIP RAP PLACED FOR EROSION CONTROL AND STRUCTURAL SAFEGUARDS FOR
WILDLIFE. THE FINAL CONTAINMENT AREAS AND OUTLET STRUCTURE WILL HAVE WATER
QUALITY PURE ENOUGH TO MEET EPA STANDARDS FOR DISPERSION BACK INTO NATURAL
SURROUNDINGS.
